About this spot
Izletište Kugla sits in the village of Ponikve near Vareš, at the foot of the Zvijezda mountains in central Bosnia. The place is named after a four-tonne granite sphere: it was found in the Javornički potok in 1970, under the roots of an uprooted pine, and now stands on a pedestal in front of the restaurant – the most photographed spot on the site. The restaurant has the feel of a mountain hunting lodge and serves hearty food: many dishes are cooked under the peka or in the sač. There is parking in front of the house. You can stay with a tent or in your vehicle – five vehicle pitches and five tent pitches are available, with two people included in the price. Shower and toilet are currently housed in an apartment that all camping guests may use; there are also toilets in the restaurant. Bicycles and motorbikes can be stored in a garage. Drinking water and electricity are available on site – the power is provisional for now, as the site is still growing. A dedicated campsite with sanitary facilities is being built – until then, this is what you will find on site. The Zvijezda mountains surround the place with old beech and fir forests, high moors and springs; roe deer, wild boar and fox live here, and in the higher areas also wolf and brown bear. A paved walking path starts at the site, and the mountain hut Planinarski dom Mekuše and the Vareška transverzala “Zvjezdane staze” lead through the mountains; its MTB crossing covers 59.6 km. In winter the ski area is about five kilometres away. A special destination is the Pećina Ponikva: a natural cave that was enlarged into a road tunnel and is home to bats. Swimming in the brook at the site is not possible at the moment – a conversion is planned. Your host is Violeta Babić (VB).
